The Department of Applied Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting Studies in the Faculty of Arts has the following vacancy: professor in the field of Hispanic culture (85%)

Position

You will contribute to the University of Antwerp’s three core tasks: education (40%), research (40%) and services (20%). Your role will also include organisational and managerial aspects.

Education

  • You will provide high-quality education in Hispanic culture.
  • The teaching assignment may evolve in function of the course programme and internal consultation with colleagues. The total teaching load will be minimum 15 ECTS credits and maximum 20 ECTS credits (for a 85% position).
  • You will teach:
    • Spanish: Society and Culture in Spain (BA2, 3 ECTS): this course provides a general introduction to the historical and political structures of Spain (language of instruction: Spanish);
    • Spanish: Society and Culture in Spain – Seminar (BA2, 3 ECTS): this subject covers Spanish cultural and social aspects through individual and group activities to improve the students’ reading, listening and speaking skills in Spanish (language of instruction: Spanish);
    • Spanish: Society and Culture in Latin America (BA3, 3 ECTS): this course provides a general introduction to the historical and political structures of Latin America (language of instruction: Spanish);
    • Spanish: Society and Culture in Latin America – Seminar (BA3, 3 ECTS): this subject covers Latin American cultural and social aspects through individual and group activities to improve the students’ reading, listening and speaking skills in Spanish (language of instruction: Spanish);
    • Spanish: Area Studies (Master in Translation, Master in Interpreting, 3 ECTS): Starting from a thorough general knowledge of the Spanish and Latin American cultural field (see BA subjects), certain topics relevant to the Master of Translation and Master of Interpreting are explored in depth (language of instruction: Spanish);
    • New BA elective course (BA in applied linguistics, 3 ECTS, open to all students in applied linguistics, whatever their language combination (language of instruction: English or Dutch).
  • You will play a role in developing activating, student-centred and competence-driven programme components and study programmes.
  • You will supervise students during the writing of bachelor’s and master’s papers.

Research

  • You will build academic research in Hispanic Culture.
  • Content alignment with ongoing research in the TricS research group is an asset.
  • You will initiate new lines of research and coordinate the progress of scientific research projects. You will also participate in ongoing research programmes.
  • You will acquire and manage national and international research funding.
  • You will publish in international peer-reviewed journals and write, edit and contribute to books published by leading scientific publishers.
  • You will develop an international scientific network.
  • You will supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

Services

  • You will play a role in the provision of both academic services and service to society, within the institution and externally. You will participate in student recruitment, boards and committees, science communication.

Organisation and leadership

  • You will accept coordinating responsibilities in the areas of education, research and/or services and you will contribute to policy.
  • Your leadership style will be motivating and coaching. You will be attentive to your employees’ growth and development processes.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in Cultural Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Cultural History, Linguistics and/or Literary Studies, Translation and/or Interpreting Studies, with a clear focus on Hispanic culture.
  • You can demonstrate several years of postdoctoral experience (or equivalent).
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You have established an excellent research portfolio including international peer-reviewed scientific publications that unmistakably demonstrate your expertise in Hispanic culture.
  • It is an asset if you have published on topics that relate aspects of Hispanic culture to translation and/or interpreting.
  • You will teach in Spanish. Your writing and speaking skills are at the level of native speakers (European Framework of Reference C2) for Spanish.
  • A good command of English is an asset (European Framework of Reference C1), as this will be the language for acquiring scholarships and project grants. It is also the language of instruction of the new BA elective course that you will teach if your written and spoken proficiency in Dutch is not at C1-level.
  • A good command of Dutch is an asset.
  • If you do not speak Dutch, the administrative language of the university, you should be willing to obtain a CEFR B2 level of proficiency in Dutch. As soon as you take on teaching duties as a programme component coordinator, you should be able to demonstrate a CEFR C1 level of proficiency in the language of instruction. The University of Antwerp supports international staff members through an integration trajectory and offers tailor-made language coaching in compliance with Flanders’ statutory language regulations.
