Concert with Piano Variations on the battle song “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!”, Leuven, October 22, 20:30 hrs.

Grote Aula Maria Theresia LEUVEN

Intro 19:45u Christine Dysers (Dutch)

The People United Will Never Be Defeated (¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!) is a left-wing battle song by Chilean composer Sergio Ortega. Frederic Rzewski (USA) wrote a series of variations on it that has been justly compared to Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. Rzewski uses all the possible registers of the piano, from soft lyricism to blunt percussiveness, and from extreme precision to free improvisation.
The compelling video of the Chilean counterrevolution and choruses by its Leuven counterpart will ensure a startling finale.

Daan Vandewalle plays The People United with complete abandon and devotion, and using all of his virtuosity and musicality. US critics acclaimed his first CD of music by Charles Ives, saying “he puts many American classical musicians to shame…”.
