Fascination for the Foe: Self and Other in the Dutch and Spanish Golden Age
The seventeenth century was the Golden Age of the two powers that faced each other in the Eighty Year War: the waning star of the Spanish Monarchy, and the rising one of the Dutch Republic. For both of them this strife-full century constitutes a keystone in their nation building: for Spain, it is the Siglo de Oro of arts and letters, of Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderón, Velázquez, and many others; for the Dutch, it is the Gouden Eeuw of the politics of the Republic, and also of artists such as P.C. Hooft, J. van den Vondel, F. Hals, Rembrandt van Rijn, Vermeer, and many others.
This congress explores how seventeenth-century Spanish and Dutch artists expressed their idea of the national community by depicting the foe as a necessary contrast to their ideal citizen, but the congress also examines the curiosity that Dutch and Spanish felt towards each other before and after 1648. The interdisciplinary international congress will therefore focus on seventeenth-century Spanish and Dutch art and literature. It will explore how, in these artistic and literary representations, the image of the enemy contributed essentially to constructing a certain idea of the national community, it will examine how this idea related to power and authority, and how it was enriched through attraction and curiosity for the ways of the other.
