Calisto courts Melibea but she rejects him. His servant advices him to use the matchmaker Celestina. She bewitches the girl and arranges a meeting for which she is handsomely paid. When his servants claim their part and she refuses they kill her. In turn they are executed for this crime. In a nightly seduction Calisto robs Melibea of her virginity; when he leave he falls from the ladder and dies. Melibea kills herself by jumping from the tower of her father’s house. Her father mourns her death and complains bitterly to Fate, the World and Love. So simple is the version of the Comedia de Calisto y Melibea by Fernando de Rojas (1502). But the play is soon extended with a secondary intrigue and a second love scene. The new version is called the Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea, the Comedia is soon forgotten only to be revived centuries later as La Celestina.
