(ref. BAP-2023-465)

We are looking for a full-time PhD researcher (4 years) with a passion for Latin American literature and Translation Studies. The PhD bursary will be engaged in the Research Group “Translation and Intercultural Transfer”, which is described in the link below. The PhD bursary will have the opportunity to work in close contact with different other PhD researchers affiliated to CERES (Centre for Reception Studies, KU Leuven), which adopts an interdisciplinary approach that combines reception and translation studies.
Project
This PhD project studies the cross-cultural transfer of ‘transnationality’, one of the main perspectives from which Latin American literature has been approached in recent decades. Specifically, it will analyse how the (trans)national images represented in five works by contemporary Peruvian authors evolve in translations into French, English, and Dutch as well as in their film adaptations and how these representations are assessed in the corresponding reception. By doing so, the project aims to determine to what extent the transnational disposition shared by these writers is perceived in a transnational context.
The job description of a PhD scholar is as follows:
  • Conduct research in the field of Latin American literature, translation and intercultural transfer.
  • Present research findings at (international) conferences and publish in peer-reviewed international journals.
  • Write and defend a doctoral thesis.
  • Participate in collective scientific activities and interactions within the research unit. In this context, you may also be assigned limited teaching-related duties at the university.
Profile
  • You obtained excellent academic results and hold a Master’s degree (or will receive one this summer) in the field of linguistics and literature, Máster en Estudios Ibéricos e Iberoamericanos or applied linguistics, with a focus on Spanish.
  • You have expertise in contemporary Latin American literature and a keen interest in its translation and intercultural transfer.
  • You have an excellent command of Spanish, English, French, and Dutch.
  • You have sound organisational skills , you are able to work independently and you perform well in a team.
  • You are highly motivated for research and are willing to look for additional funds.
Offer
  • We offer you a full-time PhD fellowship for a period of four years. The initial appointment is for one year, renewable for three years after a positive evaluation.
  • An inspiring and stimulating academic working environment in the heart of Brussels.
  • Opportunities for training and career guidance through KU Leuven’s doctoral school.
  • A salary in line with university pay scales for doctoral students.
  • All the usual facilities for doctoral fellows at the KU Leuven Campus Brussels, such as office space, laptop and the necessary funds for participation in international conferences.
  • Completion of the project will lead to the degree of doctor awarded by KU Leuven.
